I came across this tag over at Lost Girl’s Books, and it looked a lot of fun, so I wanted to give it a try as well. I do not know where it originated though.

Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

There isn’t really a place where I wouldn’t read. I usually prefer sitting on couches over chairs, so I read mostly on sofas or, at night, in bed.

Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/ a certain amount of pages?

I often read before I go to sleep and the sleep can come over me very rapidly, so I have gotten used to stopping at random points in a story. So glad for eReaders here, who will remember where you left off, even if I am already to sleepy to remember.

However, when I am fully awake, I prefer to finish at the end of a chapter (or one more, and another 😉)

Bookmark or random piece of paper?

I often use movie and theater tickets as a bookmark. It reminds me of many a nice evening I’ve had. But, if they are not around it can be any kind of paper.

Some of the bookmarks I am currently using.
Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?

This depends a lot on how much focus I have at a given time. I wouldn’t specifically put on music or television, but if it is one and my attention span is >goldfish then I will be fine with it. I am also used to reading also when people are talking around me, and although I like to follow the conversations as well, I can usually tune it down in my head.

Do you eat or drink while reading?

I often have a drink next to me when I am reading – most likely tea or hot chocolate in winter and cold tea in summer. I only eat when reading on the eReader, because then I only need one hand for the book and besides I really don’t want to have crumbs in my tree books!

Reading at home or everywhere?

At the moment – now that we are all stuck at home – at home. But I used to do a lot of my reading when traveling by train. It is the most relaxing things that just makes the time fly by.

One book at a time or several at once?

Some times I don’t think “several” will cover it. I always read a couple of books at a time, even though there tend to be some books which I am reading but haven’t touched in quite a while. Earlier this year I finally cleared some books from my currently reading that had been on there for years, so everything is relatively fresh these days. Currently I try to only read about 5 books at a time, but a couple of years ago this could have easily been 15 or so.

Reading out loud or silently in your head?

In my head – although there are some books, especially some classics which were not very easy reading, where I have felt compelled to read out loud for some reason🤷. Since no-one was around, I just gave in.

Do you read ahead or even skip pages?

No. I don’t like to have my stories spoiled so I don’t check. The only thing I do sometimes is check how many pages are left in a chapter (to determine whether I can finish the entire chapter or not).

Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

Is there no option where you don’t break the spine on purpose but neither strain yourself to keep it new? My main philosophy here is that I want to be able to hold the book comfortably. This means that sometimes the spine breaks, and sometimes it doesn’t.

Do you write in your books?

When I was younger I used to write in the beginning of the book where I got it and who gave it to me. It was nice to see these things once I opened the books again. However I have sort of fallen out of the habit of doing this. I never write in the books otherwise. I have a notebook for notes – if needed.

  1. I miss these – we used to have them come along at BL every once in awhile. I might have to do this myself in the next couple of days. 🙂

Cool answers! And the habit of using movie and theatre tickets which prompts you to recall the fun time you had! Boring me uses sticky tabs hehe.

    1. Now with COVID everything is electronic tickets so I am not collecting new ones at the moment – and that is just the cinema because that’s the only thing that is open right now.

The author

After a day of work, Marjolein likes to wind down with a book or two, or five! Unapologetic reader of at the very least three books at any given time, she apparently is unable to settle on a favorite genre.

She might pause her audiobook just long enough to discuss books online.
