The Year Shakespeare Ruined My Life

I was looking for some light escapism to read over the weekend – I have been feeling slightly reading slump-ish and I wanted to reverse it as soon as possible. Than I saw The Year Shakespeare Ruined My Life popping up all over my feed, and remembering that I still had an ARC of it, I decided to quickly read it.

The main character, Alison, is busy preparing the best possible starting points for college applications, when she decides to produce the school production of A Midsummer’s Night Dream. However, as she is navigating it trying to make it work, she has a lot of other things going on as well.

For me, this was certainly a quick and easy read. I finished it in under 24h which is something considering the slumpish-ness that has currently overtaken me. As such, I am very grateful for reading it. On the other hand, there is only so much teenage angst I can handle at any given moment. A lot of it was based on miscommunications and assumptions and that’s a trope I really don’t like. I also think “ye olde Shakespearean Disaster” is a missed opportunity to call it “ye olde Shakespearean Tragedy” but that is probably just me.
