WWW Wednesday #5

This weekend, I was pretty optimistic. I managed to finish three books on a single day – one of which was for book club, which I finished a healthy two hours before it started. However, after Saturday, I am once again feeling rather overwhelmed with books and work, and I feel constantly stressed because of construction works of both the building I live in and the building I work in. Feels like I can never escape the drills, especially with COVID it’s much more difficult to go somewhere else. WWW Wednesday is a bookish meme which is currently hosted by Taking On A World Of Books. Its idea is very simple, answer the three following questions:

I am slowly making my way through Carnivalesque. At this point it is hard for me to figure out whether it’s the book or me, but I have some serious problems keeping focused on it. However, I sort of decided it is the next book to finish – since I started this for bingo even before September.

I also made some progress on Beyond Kuiper, but only a little. On GR this is currently averaging at 1 star, and while I don’t find it inspired yet, that feel a little bit harsh.

I have started a new audiobook – These Vengeful Hearts -, since I quite enjoyed my previous listening experience, and it might just help me out of my reading slump.

Lastly, after the GoodReads Monday post I was looking forward to reading False Value so much, that I made a little start with that as well. I never learn not to start new books when I am already reading a lot.

So, last Saturday I was glad when I finished all of these books. Reviews to follow later.

The Crying of Lot 49 and I just didn’t get along. It was the read for my book club, but I hated it right from the beginning. Pretentiously long sentences, filled with a female MC who has no personality and who doesn’t exist at all out of context with her male connections. This was extremely cringe worthy and old-fashioned for me. I know it is from the 1960s but o boy, did it not age terribly. Would not recommend – due to COVID we were only three (women) in the book club last Saturday and we sort of thrashed the book.

Binti is a novella I got at a recent book buying spree, and I am glad I did. It was a surprising read and I am so glad I already own the two sequels. With Binti I also finally filled my first square of Bingo – Aliens.

The Original I listened to since I wanted to try if Audiobooks could get me out of the reading slump I have been sliding into lately. It was easy to listen to and the book was rather short anyway, so I would like to try more audiobooks. However, the Original was not as original (see what I did there?) as I had hoped.

Very difficult to say. When feeling slightly reading slump-ish, I usually try to not make too many plans and just go with the flow. The general goal remains to finish what I have started already, so I will try to go with that…

How was your reading week? Read anything you would recommend? Let me know in the comments!

    1. I have just decided to take the next week off (I didn’t take holidays before since I was hoping COVID numbers would improve but that is very unrealistic at this point, unfortunately). So, now I hope to get some nice Autumn reading done!

  1. Ah! I empathize with your Carnivale reading experience — I’m feeling the same way about the Grishaverse.

Re: Slump-ish. Have you tried Margaret Rogerson’s work? Her books (N = 2 at present) are light and whimsical, and very escapist.

  2. The slump is very real. Sometimes, inspiration strikes and you power through. I recently got through my slump by rereading one of my favorite series. I had to read the Crying of Lot 49 for an English class in undergrad, and I hated the professor for the rest of the semester. At least you and your friends got to thrash it after. Here’s to a better next week. Happy reading πŸ™‚
